Before you can begin trading in the current stock market, you should establish enough knowledge about its terms. The most important concept that you should master is the definition of stocks itself.

Stock is simply a share in the ownership of a company. Stocks represent an entitlement of the assets and retained earnings of a company. As you purchase more stocks, your stake of ownership in the company becomes bigger. Stock may also mean the same thing as shares or equity.

Holding or purchasing a company’s stock means that you are a guaranteed owner or shareholder of that company together with other shareholders. This means that you have a right (although sometimes very small) to everything that the company has. As a shareholder, you have the right to claim your dividends or the share of the earnings of the company. You also gain voting rights that is attached to the stock.

Stocks are represented by stocks certificates. It is a document that serves as proof or record of your purchase of stock. Before the rise of the electronic age, traders would present this certificate to stock brokers when they wanted to sell them. These days, that is no longer necessary since trades are already transacted electronically.

The important thing about being a shareholder is that you have the right to a portion of the company’s profits and assets. Without this, your money that you invested in stocks will become worthless. Educate yourself more about the concepts and system of the current stock market before you decide on investing your money in it.
